My Theory is that serie has lost so many people that she pretends to be cold and detached and lies to herself that she doesn't love her disciples because everyone she meets she is always preparing for goodbye the moment she meets them all the way until they are actually gone she is always training and self lying to ease her attachment to them so it doesn't feel like a big loss
Like how she is always training to suppress her mana she is also bottling within herself with the mana also her love for others and like the mana it still leaks out and people who pay attention like fern can notice the mana is unstable it's been repressed exactly like her love for her students
