This situation is kind of like Wakanda from Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The Wakandans has a tradition of letting anyone to challenge the current ruler of Wakanda to claim the throne for themselves. Even if the new king has rotten personality and vision also killed the previous king, the people are obligated to follow him even fighting against their own prince who is fighting to reclaim his people. Traditions that are maintained for a long time causes those who uphold them to be rigid and very close minded to accept changes. So, i can understand why Algard decided to play by the country's rules and values for the revolution that he envisioned. But, along the way, he become so twisted and lost when this is all just about defying the system that hurts many people including his own family.

A tragic villain for sure, but i feel people give Algard a little too much slack. If he wanted to lessen the distance between the nobles and commoners, he should've worked to sharpen his political acuity and worked to support his sisters' efforts behind the scene, seeing that her research in thaumaturgy is gonna bring about the change he wanted to see. At this point in the series, i assume that the commoner rebellion failed because of the literal power imbalance between those with magic and those without, and Anis' research is gonna change that.
I think his indignation at the current magic society is genuine, but he uses that to convince himself of his own righteousness, allying himself with the conservative nobles, displaying his impulsiveness to the public by escorting a commoner-born girl, only to kill her for her mind control power. All these points to him blatently just vying for power he doesn't deserve, hasn't earned, and just being envious of his sister, instead of actually putting in effort (since we havent been shown any of that in the series apart from his scheming to get more power).
They're all a result of the driving force of society's expectations the moment they were born. Fucked up. Like, dude, if you think about, even with Anis keeping her right to the throne, chaos would still happen regardless because nobles dont want a magicless, let alone a female, ruler. If both had right to the throne, a split faction between Algard and Anis would still happen, chaos would still happen, because nobles are a bunch drama-seeking bitches. There is no right answer, something was bound to cause shit to hit the fan. While its debatable that Anis had no control to Algard's spiral of inferiority, yes, she could've mentally supported him to an extent, but it was also painfully inevitable for them to drift apart because of high society's blabber mouths. However, despite being a result of his environment, any and all actions done by Algard are his very own responsibilities.
