He got tired of living as a Prince and then the minute he saw her, he ditched his royal life for a girl who genuinely captures his interest.
Notice how Pride clings to his arm? She secretly wants Val to take her away. Pride has already envisioned this scenario in her imagination. Just saying. Hoping maybe Pride does have a vision of running away together with Val if she decides her own happy ending route.
